Answers to your questions about helping Manitoba’s refugee claimants through United Way.
Q: Why donate here? Wouldn’t it be better to give directly to a refugee or newcomer-serving agency?
All giving is good, however you choose to do it.
There are a lot of community agencies that are working with refugee claimants and newcomers, and a diverse set of needs that evolve constantly.
By giving here through United Way, you can be sure your generosity gets to where it’s needed most.
Q: Where will my donation go?
We promise that your donation will go to where it will make the biggest difference possible.
Working closely with community partners, and with the guidance of a volunteer investment committee, we will be able to maximize the impact of all donations, and will update the community on where donations are being invested and what difference they are making.
Q: Where can I find out about things I can donate besides money?
Here’s where you can learn more about how you can donate items personally or run a collection drive for much needed item with family, friends or workplace.
Q: Shouldn’t we be helping people who already live here first?
This is not about prioritizing one need for another; this is about mobilizing our compassion and humanity to go further and help more people.
Time and again, Winnipeggers, Manitobans, and Canadians have shown that we can. Indeed it defines the spirit that makes us so proud of our city, province and country.
Q: Is this a shift in focus for United Way?
Not at all.
United Way donors already support 23 community agencies that help newcomers and refugees every day in Winnipeg.
There is an urgent situation in our city, and people are asking how they can help. United Way was created by Winnipeggers as a way to be there for each other when it matters most, and this is one of those times.
Q: Could this impact funding to other United Way agency partners?
The work they do is critical and relied on by thousands of Winnipeggers every single day. Thanks to United Way donors, all commitments to agency partners are secure
