Cargill gives to women-serving agency through United Way Winnipeg Days of Caring
Cargill employees marked International Women’s Day by giving something of themselves to a United Way agency partner that serves women and their children in our community.
On Tuesday, 18 Cargill employees assembled 60 hygiene kits for clients of Fort Garry Women’s Resource Centre (FGWRC) – a United Way donor-supported family resource centre with a vision to create “a community where women & children are safe, healthy, valued and empowered”.

And then today, on International Women’s Day, six Cargill employees delivered those kits to FGWRC and volunteered their time at a Bingo & Brunch event – making pancakes and running the bingo for women at the centre.

The hygiene kit assembly at Cargill’s Winnipeg office was part of a United Way Pop Up Day of Caring – an interactive and impactful volunteer activity that comes to your workplace and gives employees a hands-on opportunity to help out a United Way agency partner.
“These kits are really amazing. They are luxuries that a lot of women don’t have in their lives,” said Andrea Shnider, counsellor/program coordinator at FGWRC.
FGWRC’s Andrea Shnider, bottom right, with Cargill volunteers. Andrea says some women who visit her centre have to choose food above hygiene products.
Andrea said sometimes her clients have to choose between buying hygiene products for themselves or feeding their kids.
“We’ve partnered with Cargill before. They really have a giving spirit and generosity. You can tell they really care about the clients,” Andrea said.
Sarah Jones, Customer Service Representative at Cargill, was thrilled to be at the FGWRC and see the women enjoying the brunch and bingo. She was also happy to see the kits they built at the centre and ready to help women who need them.
Cargill volunteers spun the bingo drum and called numbers to an excited group of ladies.
“It was a great event to build the kits, but to actually come to the centre meet people is even better. To be able to see the great work being done here and feeling like we’re contributing in a small way is wonderful,” said Sarah.
And it all coming together on International Women’s Day feels like it “amplifies the impact.”
“It’s about celebrating our clients – celebrating the strength and the gifts they have as women.”
A big thank you to the Winnipeg Cargill Cares Committee and the Cargill Agricultural Supply Chain North America Womens’ Resource Group, who partnered to make the United Way Days of Caring happen for FGWRC!
