In 2014 United Way Winnipeg celebrated 50+ years of a thriving Filipino community in Winnipeg, with a feature exhibit in our first floor atrium From Manila to Manitoba.
It’s an oral history project created in 2009 by ANAK, a Filipino youth mentoring organization, now revisited with United Way Winnipeg support.
Snapshots of youthful experiences are highlighted to capture the complexities of cultural identification and its development among Filipino Canadian immigrants, second generation and multi-racial youth. Themes of family, community and belonging are explored.
In conjunction with the exhibit, United Way Winnipeg hosted Pananaw 2014, ANAK’s Philippine Heritage Youth Forum, in our Learning Centre. Almost 40 Filipino youth had the opportunity to discover the importance of sharing the oral tradition. A gala reception to celebrate the Exhibit and the Filipino Heritage in Winnipeg followed the forum.
