Diversity makes Winnipeg a stronger city, with perspectives, talents and resources from many cultures at our fingertips.
We’re celebrating 50+ years of a thriving Filipino community in Winnipeg with a feature exhibit in our first floor atrium From Manila to Manitoba.
It’s an oral history project created in 2009 by ANAK, a Filipino youth mentoring organization, now revisited with United Way support.
Snapshots of youthful experiences are highlighted to capture the complexities of cultural identification and its development among Filipino Canadian immigrants, second generation and multi-racial youth. Themes of family, community and belonging are explored.
In conjunction with the exhibit, United Way is hosting Pananaw 2014, ANAK’s Philippine Heritage Youth Forum, in our Learning Centre. Up to 40 Filipino youth will have the opportunity to discover the importance of sharing the oral tradition. A gala reception to celebrate the Exhibit and the Filipino Heritage in Winnipeg will follow the forum.
