Conscious Kindness

May 16

Conscious Kindness Banner - United Way Winnipeg

Conscious kindness is the happiest day of the year! Show your local love by surprising your friends, family, co-workers—and total strangers!—with conscious acts of kindness. Share your actions on your favourite social platform with the hashtag #LocalLove to help spread the good vibes around the whole country!

Bake cookies, rake lawns, give compliments…anything that puts thoughtfulness first and makes this world a little bit better. You never know what difference a kind deed will make.

You can also download a Conscious Kindness poster, postcard, and stickers to help spread more #LocalLove on May 16! Click on the buttons below:

Hang posters around your workplace, school, community organization—anywhere you can—and encourage everyone around you to brighten someone’s day by doing something nice for no reason at all.

Together we can make the world more compassionate, considerate and connected with each act of kindness.

If you’ve been kind or experienced kindness, tell the world and inspire others by sharing stories and ideas on social media with the hashtag #LocalLove. Let’s celebrate a day that inspires people everywhere to be kind every day!

Kind FAQs

Kindness. It makes our community better for everyone. Never underestimate the power of even the smallest act of kindness. It has the potential to change a life. And when multiplied by millions of people, small gestures of local love can transform the world.

On Wednesday, May 16, 2018 United Way Winnipeg invites you to help spread a culture of kindness in our community.

What is it?
United Way’s Conscious Kindness Day is a call to for everyone to be (extra) kind across Canada!

When is it?
Wednesday, May 16, 2018 (ALL DAY!)

Where does it happen?
Everywhere! At work! At school! At the breakfast table! In your heart! And for the first time ever, across the whole country as over 100 United Ways share the local love with their communities.

How do I do it?
Start sharing posters & postcards & stickers now, plan kind words & acts (see the “How you can be kind!” section below the FAQ section). On May 16 put your kindness into action!

Do I have to plan a big event?
Not at all. A plan to do kindness can be just one person. For past Conscious Kindness Days, groups of people – like schools or workplaces – have collaborated to on everything from cookie giveaways to community clean-ups. Any kindness, large or small, creates more kindness!

Is there a hashtag?
Yes! Use #LocalLove to share your kind acts on social media!

How will United Way know my business/org/school is part of Kindness Day?
We, and many others, will be watching the #LocalLove hashtag on social media. You can also tag us on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram!

How is Conscious Kindness different from Random Acts of Kindness?
Conscious Kindness is literally the opposite of Random Acts of Kindness! It’s conscious. It’s intentional. It comes from the “golden rule” belief that we create the kind of community we want to live in by treating others with the respect, love and care that we want to be treated with ourselves.

Why do it?
The effect of kindness is profound. It changes the giver, and the receiver. Read the “Why kindness?” section beneath this FAQ section!

Be part of United Way’s Conscious Kindness Day. Together, we can make the world more compassionate, considerate and connected with each act of kindness.

If you’ve been kind or experienced kindness, tell the world and inspire others by sharing stories and ideas on social media with the hashtag #LocalLove.

Let’s celebrate a day that inspires people everywhere to be kind every day.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘what are you doing for others?’”
— Martin Luther King Jr.

Why Kindness?

Kindness is good for your bottom line – 93% of people want to work for a company that cares.

Kindness builds morale and makes people feel good about their job – 88% feel their job is more fulfilling when they are provided opportunities to make a positive impact on social and environmental issues.

Kindness inspires teamwork and helps people feel respected and less alone – Kindness connects people and makes them feel valued and included.

Being kind improves mental health and reduces stress – Being kind improves overall well-being and builds emotional resilience.

Being kind feels good – Being kind releases feel-good endorphins, just like exercise. So making someone smile makes you feel good too!

Kindness broadens our perspective – Being kind requires attention, so you notice more while helping others. As a result, you have more opportunities to learn and gain insight, and practice mindfulness.

Kindness makes people want to be around us – People are attracted to kind people. Gratitude and appreciation are recipes for peaceful coexistence!

Thanks for sharing in the happiest day of the year, and spreading the good mood to your family, staff, customers and members!
