It’s never too early to start thinking about what you want to be when you grow up.
And the kids who participate in Gilbert Park Going Places, a program run by United Way agency partner Nor’ West Co-op Community Health Centre, are getting some help in doing just that thanks to GenNext volunteers.
For the past couple of months members of GenNext have been welcoming youth from Gilbert Park Going Places’ Careers for Kids program into their workplaces to go on tours, and these tours are certainly not your average fieldtrip.
More than a building tour, Careers for Kids provides its young participants with the opportunity to meet with young business and community leaders who are committed to making Winnipeg a great place to live and work.
GenNext volunteers speak to the kids about their own area of passion, educational background, and professional development. As role models, they impart the important lesson of doing what you love, working hard at your dream and making a difference in the lives of others.
Careers for Kids also allows for its participants to explore the possibilities of particular career paths by providing them with exciting hands-on experiences whenever they visit a workplace.
In 2010, GenNexters at the University of Winnipeg, Manitoba Hydro, Film Training Manitoba and Wellington West Capital have all hosted Careers for Kids, and even more workplaces are lined up to participate in 2011.
A big thank you goes out to all the GenNexters who have shared their time and talents with Careers for Kids. You are helping to create the next generation of young leaders right here in Winnipeg.
