Koats for Kids

Koats for Kids is committed to following public health guidelines and providing a safe environment for our volunteers, donors, community partners, and staff.

Here are a few things we’re doing to help reduce the spread of COVID-19:
• Requiring staff and volunteers to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19
• Implementing a self-screening process for staff and volunteers, including asking anyone that is feeling ill to stay home.
• Reducing volunteer group sizes to accommodate physical distancing requirements
• Requiring all volunteers to wear a non-medical face mask during their volunteer shift. Gloves will also be available.
• Asking all volunteers to sanitize or wash their hands upon entry into the building and throughout their shift.
• Frequently sanitizing all workstations and commonly touched surfaces.

Thanks to our generous program partners – Motel 6, Super 8, Inn at the Forks, Norwood Hotel, and Hilton Winnipeg Airport Suites – all coats and ski pants will continue to be professionally cleaned before being distributed to the community. Hats, mitts and scarves will also be cleaned in the Koats for Kids Volunteer Centre upon arrival.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call 204-586-5628 (KOAT) or email us.

Winter gear for little Winnipeggers

Every year, from September to January, Winnipeggers donate over 6,000 coats, and Koats for Kids shares this winter gear with Winnipeg families.

Order Now (School/Daycare/Agency)

2021 has been a stressful time for our community. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has taken a considerable toll on the health and well-being of Winnipeggers, and many people are experiencing poverty for the first time.

Each year, we receive even more requests for gently used winter coats, hats, mitts, scarves, ski pants, and boots. This year, we expect the need to be even greater. We need your help – now more than ever.

Have winter outerwear to share?

Donate your new and gently used kid’s winter gear now. Winnipeg kids need your help!

Coats (with working zipper) • Boots • Ski pants • Mitts • Scarves • Toques

Have adult winter gear to donate? No problem! While our focus is on distributing winter outerwear to children, we also distribute winter coats and accessories to adults, whenever possible.

Please make sure coats are clean, in good condition, and the zippers work. Please place all items in a plastic bag before bringing them to a Koats for Kids drop-off location.

Where can you donate?

If you have a large donation, please call 204-586-5628 for guidance on a suitable drop-off location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I order coats myself?

Koats for Kids only accepts orders from Winnipeg schools, daycares or nonprofit and social service organizations.

Can I come to Koats for Kids to select winter gear for my family?

Sorry, Koats for Kids is not open to the public.

Does Koats for Kids distribute winter outerwear to communities outside of Winnipeg?

Koats for Kids is a program of United Way Winnipeg. We are a local United Way, supporting the Winnipeg community. Unfortunately, we do not have the inventory or resources to distribute winter gear outside of Winnipeg.

For a list of organizations with second-hand clothing available in your community, please go to 211 Manitoba, click on the Food & Clothing tile, enter your location, check the Second-hand Clothing box and press Search.

Once an order is placed, how long will it take to receive winter gear?

Koats for Kids relies on donations from the community, and orders are fulfilled by volunteers—so we are unable to provide a standard timeframe for fulfilling orders. If you have questions about an order that you have placed, please contact Koats for Kids.

Other than Koats for Kids, where can I get winter coats for my family?

For a list of organizations that have second-hand clothing, please go to 211 Manitoba, click on the Food & Clothing tile, enter your location, check the Second-hand Clothing box and click on Search.

Want to collect coats for kids?

Host your own collection drive!

Running a collection drive to gather up gently used winter gear is a great way to celebrate a birthday, engage your customers, or show your students’ community spirit.

Register your coat drive and we’ll send you an email with tips on organizing a successful drive and a poster to help promote it!

Want to volunteer?

The health and safety of our volunteers and community partners are our top priority. As such, we’re asking everyone to self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms prior to coming to Koats for Kids, and to stay home when feeling ill. As part of our continued commitment to providing a safe, healthy and respectful workplace to our employees, volunteers, partners and community members, United Way Winnipeg will be requiring Koats for Kids staff and volunteers to be fully vaccinated. Additionally, we have reduced volunteer group sizes and are requiring volunteers to wear non-medical face masks during their shift. Hand sanitizer, masks and gloves will be available, along with increased sanitization of workstations and frequently touched surfaces. Please follow public health advice related to self-isolation if you’ve recently travelled or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 before volunteering.

Thank you – we hope to see you soon!

We run on volunteer power!

Imagine 7000+ kg of coats, hats, mitts, scarves, ski pants & boots. That’s a lot of sorting, organizing & packaging!

You can join us for a few hours so we can get our packages to kids quickly. Bring your family, a small group of friends or co-workers—or come on your own—and share in Winnipeg’s legendary community spirit. Volunteers must be a minimum of 16 years of age.

Just call 204-586-5628 or email us to set up a volunteer shift at the Koats for Kids Volunteer Centre at 231 King Street.

To schedule a volunteer shift for your group, please email United Way Winnipeg.
