The Making a Difference 2016-2017 Report measures the impact of this generosity over the past year, presents it in ways that are easy to see and understand, and points us to a future of going further to help even more Winnipeggers!
The change that Winnipeggers create with their generosity to United Way’s community fund matters in so many ways. Manitoba, for example, has the second highest dropout rate among Canadian provinces. We know that 41 out-of-school programs supported by United Way donors are helping kids improve their grades and feel better about their lives.
We know 11% of Winnipeggers are living in poverty, compared to 9% of Canadians overall, and almost 1 in 4 Manitoba kids are in poverty. Job skills and money management programs supported by United Way donors are lifting more and more Winnipeggers from poverty to employment and financial security – and stability for their kids and families.
We know that healthy families are the cornerstone of so much in our shared communities. Giving people a hand up, rather than a hand out, is the principle of building strength through United Way-supported family resource centres and other agencies creating this strength. We also know our population is growing more and more diverse – a source of strength – and recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission indicate that support for families has never been more critical.
Together we will go further – piloting new programs to bring mentorship and mental health support to more youth, investing in the Manitoba Financial Empowerment Network, and keeping doors open longer at 24 United Way-supported family resource centres.
