September 23 will be the biggest Plane Pull yet! It’s your chance for a one-of-a-kind experience pulling an 80,000+ lb. C-130 Hercules or Boeing 727 (with help from 19 friends)! Plane Pull 2016 Plane Pull
The concept is simple: teams of 20 pull a plane across the tarmac to have fun, see what’s possible when we work together, and to raise money for United Way Winnipeg.
All money raised this year goes to providing youth mentorship opportunities that help kids build strong relationships, make better choices and do better in school!
And beyond feeling good about the real difference you’ll be making in kids’ lives, this fun-filled day also features a yummy lunch, snacks from Salisbury House, live music and the chance to win some sweet prizes.
There are only a few spots left, so if you haven’t yet, register your team today to help pull for a better Winnipeg and your chance to win!
Thousands came out to cheer on a record 64 teams pulling for a better Winnipeg at the 12th annual United Way Campaign Kickoff & Plane Pull on Friday, which raised $26,349.67.
Ace Burpee warms up plane pullers with a few dance moves.
Ace Burpee, who shared MC duty with 103.1 Virgin Radio partner Chrissy Troy, introduced “Captain Community,” a.k.a. 2015 Campaign Chair Kelvin Shepherd.
“Captain Community” Kelvin Shepherd.
“United Way is all of us. It’s about Winnipeggers. More specifically, it’s all about Winnipeggers helping Winnipeggers,” said Kelvin before the pulling got started.
“it’s us being there for one another. At its core it’s about the kindness we all have inside us.”
Kelvin and the 2015 Cabinet – the Winnipeg League of Kindness Crusaders – came out in red capes, though Kelvin was the only one in blue tights.

Last year the kindness of Winnipeggers, through United Way agencies and partnerships, helped more than 250,000 people – including 35,000 through 23 family resource centres – a special focus for United Way this year.
Kelvin announced United Way’s goal to help 17,000 more people this year.
“To do it we’re going to need to raise $1 million more dollars this year than we did together in 2014.”
Lani Zastre told everyone about her journey from poverty to a stable home for her and her family with help from a United Way agency.
“I wanted to be here today because I wanted to tell you personally just how amazing you are – to make sure you know the difference you’re making for people and families that need help,” said Lani.
Lani Zastre spoke of how her family was helped.
“From my entire family: Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
The 64 teams of caring Winnipeggers, fueled by perogies and coffee, pulled their hearts out. Some had faster times than others, but in our books they’re all winners with kind hearts!

Hercules was the super-strong son of Zeus in Greek mythology – and the namesake for the arguably popular 60s animated classic The Mighty Hercules.
Hercules is also the namesake of the Lockheed C-130 Hercules – the mighty transport plane that will challenge pullers at United Way’s 2015 Campaign Kickoff and Plane Pull, proudly presented by MTS. Please join us on Friday, September 18 at the Red River College Stevenson Campus!
Yes, the Hercules has landed, and together with the returning Boeing 727 will test the will & strength of 60 teams of 20 stalwart plane pullers this year!
It is always a ton of fun (and many tons of plane) for all comers, and a wonderful way to show your generous support for our community while kicking off the United Way campaign season.
By popular demand perogies are back, as are awesome prizes for team spirit, top fundraising (teams & individuals) and fastest pull times. And every puller with $50 or more in pledges gets an official Plane Pull T-shirt!
It had to happen sometime. The DC9 has been retired!
Planning—and planing—has begun for Plane Pull 2015, an extra special event because this is United Way’s 50th anniversary in Winnipeg.
And now, with news of the retirement of our beloved “fun pull” DC9 aircraft, we’re dreaming up something heavy for this year’s pull on September 18. That’s all we can say for now; you’ll have to come pull to see what it might be!
It’ll be hard to top last year’s Plane Pull 11, which set amazing new records for both participation and fundraising.
Sponsored Executives at their “graduation,” including MTS’ Angela Casey, far right, the overall top fundraiser at Plane Pull 2014.
Angela Casey from MTS, one of our many valued Sponsored Executives, personally raised $1035 for the event, going far above and beyond her already busy schedule! It’s dedication and enthusiasm like that that makes Plane Pull so much fun and so important in the work towards a better Winnipeg.
